Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to the god of learning. Kasanoya, located on the approach to the shrine, specializes in umegaemochi, a baked rice-flour cake filled with smooth, melt-in-your-mouth red-bean paste. Fittingly, the inspiration was the tales of the sweet offerings to the gods. At the cafe, enjoy baked mochi dipped in chocolate sauce and kinako mochi with coffee or matcha, and stop next door for Japanese dolls, incense, specialty towels, and other souvenirs.
